Between Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park lies one of my secret tips – the home of the Slow Safari – Chem Chem Lodge. Here, I had one of my best safari experiences, ending with the ultimate highlight: G&T’s with a Maasai.
And here is Melita, a legendary Maasai, who has killed 2 lions because he was on foot with only his assagai (the traditional Maasai spear).
On his shoulder, you can see the blood mark, forming 2 lion tails, according to the other Maasai we met who hold Melita in the highest regard. It is the ultimate sign of manhood in the Maasai culture, even if only one lion was killed. During our visit to Chem Chem, he fascinated us with his company and stories.
In the late afternoon, he takes us on a walk through his wildlife towards the lake. Along the way, he pulls a scorpion out of its hole with just a blade of grass. Even if the small creature disgusts us, we watch curiously how casually he handles it.
Upon reaching the lake, we stand with giraffes in the background and pink flamingos in the water. Melita shows us how he traditionally makes fire. In my own attempt, I completely fail, and I still thought I am African!
The beautiful ambiance is so alluring, I only wish for a gin and tonic… Soon the team arrives, and in just a few minutes, sets up the best mobile bar I have ever seen!
Sundowners ‘par excellence’: The sun sets over the lake, a group of flamingos glides by, and we eat delicious grilled sausages… a totally magical experience.
This is exactly my thing! I’ve never seen such a nice inventive bar… They’re made in Arusha, maybe I’ll bring my own home!
