From Luxury Lodges to Tree-Climbing Lions

I don’t know why I hesitated for so long, but in February 2019, I finally visited Thornybush Game Reserve and was captivated by the quality of the safaris and wildlife viewing! Thornybush offers the perfect combination of diverse nature, exciting game drives, and lodges for every budget. Additionally, there are sensational leopard sightings and even lions that casually climb trees. Let’s go on a safari and see what Thornybush has to offer!

First, right at Jackalberry, our camp, a herd of elephants says hello. Plus, there’s this beautiful view of the Drakensberg with God’s Window and Blyde River Canyon.

Since the fence to Kruger National Park was removed, the elephant population here has increased significantly. Elephant lovers will definitely get their money’s worth here. Large herds with many babies, it seems as if the fun never ends. Here are a few impressions: Around the babies, the mothers are always very watchful and protective… And sometimes we also get a little warning…

Around the next corner, we are stopped by an unavoidable elephant roadblock. I have never been in a traffic jam so beautiful! Here are some of the ‘roadblocks’ we encountered.

And, of course… we always need more babies!

And then, very sweet, we meet a few elephants playing in the lake.

But enough about elephants for now. We had very special sightings during our visit – A leopard in the tree and lions climbing the trees.

This beautiful cat also had prey in the tree next door.

When one manages to do it, all others want to join in!

Eventually, the fun is over, and it’s time for a nap.

After this array of fantastic wildlife experiences, I must, of course, also show you the great coffee breaks in the early morning and the gin & tonic stops in the afternoon – they were fabulous!

Time to travel on, but I am sure to be back!
